S tier: Best overall

The default pick for most developers: mature agent workflows on real repositories.

Claude Code

CLI agents · From $20

Anthropic's terminal-first agent reads, edits, tests and refactors real repositories, and the same agent runs in IDEs, GitHub Actions and the Agent SDK.

Best for
Complex refactors, debugging and multi-file work in an existing repository.
Watch out
Claude models only, no local models, and usage limits need watching on larger tasks.

Codex CLI

CLI agents · Free tier · From $8 · Open source

OpenAI's open-source terminal agent works inside your existing repositories and connects to the wider Codex ecosystem.

Best for
ChatGPT subscribers and teams that want sign-in by plan, API key or a custom provider.
Watch out
Limits vary by model and plan, and cloud features need ChatGPT sign-in rather than an API key.

A tier: Excellent

Strong choices that beat S tier for some setups, such as open source, GitHub or Google.

OpenCode

CLI agents · Free tier available · Open source

MIT-licensed, model-flexible terminal agent that also runs in a desktop app, IDEs and GitHub workflows.

Best for
Developers who want open source and the freedom to switch model providers, including local models.
Watch out
Needs more provider setup than hosted agents, and quality depends on the model you pick.

GitHub Copilot

Editor extensions · Free tier · From $10

Autocomplete, chat, code review, CLI help and agent mode across most editors and GitHub itself.

Best for
Teams already standardized on GitHub, and a low-cost start at $10 a month.
Watch out
Not an AI-native IDE, and heavier agent use depends on plan limits and AI credits.

Cline

Editor extensions · Free tier available · Open source

Open-source agent for the editor and terminal with Plan/Act modes and approval for each edit and command.

Best for
Supervised, model-flexible agent work inside VS Code or JetBrains.
Watch out
Pay-per-use model costs can climb on long agent tasks.

Google Antigravity

AI IDEs · Free tier available

Google's agent-first platform runs agents across an IDE, terminal, browser and CLI, and reports their work as reviewable artifacts.

Best for
Running several agents in parallel, especially with Gemini, Firebase or Google Cloud.
Watch out
Tied to Google accounts and models, and quotas vary by plan and region.

Devin

Cloud agents · Free tier available

Cognition's autonomous engineer plans, codes, tests and opens pull requests from parallel cloud agents.

Best for
Well-scoped backlog work: migrations, bug reproduction, tests and internal tools.
Watch out
Broad or ambiguous tasks get expensive, and every change still needs human review.

Amp

CLI agents · From $20

Terminal-first agent that routes work across frontier models and can keep threads running on remote Orbs.

Best for
Long-running agent work you start locally and steer from the web.
Watch out
The free tier is closed to new users, and the editor extension has been retired.

B tier: Solid

Capable agents with clear trade-offs in price, maturity or scope.

Grok Build

CLI agents · Free tier available

Grok's terminal agent combines plan approval, parallel subagents, headless scripts and ACP integration, with support for Claude Code skills and plugins.

Best for
Grok users who want repository-wide work, terminal automation or a way to reuse Claude Code configurations.
Watch out
Terminal-first workflow; custom model endpoints need configuration, and usage costs depend on the model and access method.

Kiro Ide

AI IDEs · Free tier · From $20

AWS's agentic IDE turns prompts into specs, designs, tasks, code and pull requests.

Best for
Teams that want structured, auditable AI work on production codebases.
Watch out
Credit-based pricing is harder to predict, and the spec workflow feels heavy for small changes.

TRAE / TraeCode

AI IDEs · Free tier · From $20

TraeCode is an AI coding environment with a free plan, paired with the TraeWork task assistant.

Best for
A low-cost AI IDE: a free plan, then $20 a month for Pro.
Watch out
Free usage is limited, and paid plans are metered by monthly usage.

Jules

Cloud agents · Free tier available

Google's asynchronous agent hands GitHub tasks to cloud workers and returns pull requests.

Best for
Delegating routine GitHub maintenance; the free tier allows 15 tasks a day.
Watch out
GitHub only, runs in the cloud, and setup scripts can't keep long-running processes.

GitHub's cloud agent takes an issue or prompt, works in GitHub Actions and opens a pull request for review.

Best for
Handing backlog issues to an agent without leaving GitHub.
Watch out
Needs eligible Copilot access, and premium requests and Actions minutes add cost.

Factory

Cloud agents · From $20

Droids take engineering tasks across the terminal, IDEs, Slack, Jira, Linear and CI/CD.

Best for
Teams that want to hand off whole tickets with adjustable autonomy.
Watch out
No permanent free plan, and large tasks use up limits quickly.

Roo Code

Editor extensions · Free tier available · Open source

Open-source VS Code agent with custom modes, rules and any model provider.

Best for
Power users who want to tune how the agent plans, codes and debugs.
Watch out
Setup takes more work, and frontier models on long loops get costly.

Kilo Code

Editor extensions · Free tier available · Open source

Open-source agent for VS Code, JetBrains, the CLI and the cloud, with broad model choice.

Best for
BYOK or local models plus team controls without provider lock-in.
Watch out
Gateway, hosted inference and team plans make pricing more complex.

Augment Code

Editor extensions · From $100

Built for large codebases, with a Context Engine, IDE and CLI agents, and Cosmos cloud agents.

Best for
Engineering teams in large, complex production repositories.
Watch out
Plans start at $100 a month for teams, and completions are enterprise-only.

Aider

CLI agents · Free tier available · Open source

Free, open-source pair programmer that edits files in your local Git repository with almost any model.

Best for
Targeted multi-file edits from the terminal with full model choice.
Watch out
No bundled model plan, and weaker models apply edits less reliably.

Antigravity CLI

CLI agents · Free

Google's agent-first terminal runs several asynchronous agents and replaces Gemini CLI for individual users.

Best for
Gemini CLI users moving over, and parallel work from the terminal.
Watch out
A newer product whose workflow and docs still change quickly.

C tier: Niche

Worth it for a specific need, model or ecosystem.

Pi

CLI agents · Free tier available · Open source

A minimal, MIT-licensed terminal agent built to be customized with skills, extensions and scriptable modes.

Best for
Developers who want to build their own agent workflow on a small harness.
Watch out
No built-in sandbox, plan mode or sub-agents by default.

Zed AI

AI IDEs · Free tier · From $10 · Open source

Fast, open-source native editor with agent workflows, BYOK and support for external agents.

Best for
A fast editor that isn't a VS Code fork, with flexible model routing.
Watch out
Smaller extension ecosystem than VS Code or JetBrains.

Kimi Code

CLI agents · From $19 · Open source

Moonshot AI's terminal agent built around Kimi's long-context coding models, with an MIT-licensed CLI.

Best for
Developers who prefer Kimi models for long-context coding.
Watch out
Access starts with a paid membership or API usage.

Qwen Code

CLI agents · Free tier available · Open source

Open-source terminal agent optimized for Qwen Coder models, with subagents, MCP and headless mode.

Best for
Teams using Qwen models or Alibaba Cloud.
Watch out
The free OAuth tier ended on April 15, 2026, so you need a coding plan or an API provider.

OpenHands

Cloud agents · Free tier available · Open source

Open-source, model-agnostic platform for autonomous agents, run locally, self-hosted or in OpenHands Cloud.

Best for
Teams that want to self-host autonomous agents and inspect how they work.
Watch out
Local setup needs Docker and model keys, and changes need careful review.

D tier: Legacy

Being replaced; not recommended for new setups.

Gemini CLI

CLI agents · Free tier available · Open source

Google's open-source terminal agent, which individual users now replace with Antigravity CLI.

Best for
Existing setups on Gemini API keys or Vertex AI.
Watch out
Individual users moved to Antigravity CLI on June 18, 2026; start new work there.

How we rank

This is an editorial ranking, not a benchmark. We place each agent using the six criteria below, based on the capabilities, pricing and limits documented on its aiidelist.com page. We haven't run reproducible task tests, so there are no numeric scores.

  • Real-world task success

Fixing bugs, building features and getting tests to pass.

  • Reliability and safety

Staying in scope, asking before risky actions, and how much review the output needs.

  • Codebase understanding

Working across many files and large repositories.

  • Autonomy

Planning, tool use and running without supervision.

  • Pricing and value

Free tiers, quotas and what real tasks cost.

  • Developer experience

Setup, CLI or editor ergonomics, and integrations.

Agents and models are separate things: the same agent can work very differently with another model, so weigh each tier against the models and budget you have. Last reviewed . Spotted something out of date? Tell us.

FAQ

What is the best AI coding agent in 2026?

In our editorial ranking, Claude Code, Codex CLI, and Cursor are S tier. The best choice still depends on the models you use, your budget, and whether you prefer working in a terminal, an IDE or with cloud agents.

Is this tier list based on benchmarks?

No. It is editorial opinion based on each agent's documented capabilities, pricing and limits. Benchmarks such as SWE-bench Pro and Terminal-Bench test specific model and agent setups, and their results change with the version and configuration.

How do I make my own AI coding agent tier list?

Choose Make your own above. Drag agents between tiers on a computer, or tap an agent and then a tier on a phone. Then export a 16:9 PNG or copy a link to share it. Your list is saved in this browser.

Are shared tier lists reviewed?

No. A shared link shows a visitor's own ranking. We don't review shared lists, and search engines don't index them.
