Damon Chen Overview

Damon Chen is an independent software entrepreneur and former infrastructure software engineer at Cisco. After eight years at the company, he left his corporate career to pursue software products full-time.[1][2]

His entrepreneurial journey began in 2020, when working from home gave him additional time to learn web development, launch side projects, and participate in the Indie Hackers community. He built five applications during that year before concentrating on Testimonial, a customer-testimonial platform.[3]

Chen subsequently expanded into AI software, most notably through his acquisition and development of PDF.ai. His portfolio now covers customer feedback, document automation, and AI-generated video.[1][4] Although Testimonial began as a solo-founder business, his later descriptions of development workflows refer to a broader team.[2][5]

What Damon Chen Built

Testimonial is Chen's best-documented original business. It helps companies collect, organize, and display written and video customer testimonials. Its features include testimonial collection pages, embeddable social-proof displays, and tools for managing customer feedback.[6] Chen launched the product on December 22, 2020, after experimenting with several earlier projects.[7]

A SaaS platform for collecting, organizing, and displaying text and video testimonials. Damon Chen launched it in December 2020 and subsequently developed it into a subscription business.

PDF.ai allows users to interact with PDF documents using AI. Chen did not originally create the project: he publicly explained that he acquired its codebase when it was called Looseleaf.ai and had not yet generated revenue. He then developed and marketed the product under the PDF.ai brand.[4] An October 2023 business profile dates the PDF.ai launch to June 2023.[8]

PDFgen provides AI-assisted document creation and a developer-facing PDF generation API. Users can start with a natural-language prompt, HTML, or Markdown, refine reusable templates, and generate documents programmatically using dynamic data.[9] Chen lists the product in his personal portfolio.[1]

StreetInterview.ai generates simulated street-interview videos from text prompts. Its interface supports scene descriptions, different aspect ratios, and generated video output without traditional filming.[10] The product is also listed in Chen's portfolio.[1]

His wider portfolio also mentions QuickyAI, Docsium, Vivid Share, Supportman, and SeeYa Future Me. These illustrate his experimentation across browser extensions, productivity tools, marketing assets, and smaller software businesses.[1]

How Damon Chen Builds

Chen learned modern web development after working primarily with lower-level infrastructure technologies. In 2021, he identified React, Node.js, REST APIs, webhooks, Firebase, and Stripe among the technologies he had learned. He also described React and Firebase as his frontend and backend stack at that time; these statements should not be treated as confirmation of his current stack.[3][2]

His early product-development strategy emphasized speed and reuse. An interview described how he built Testimonial's initial version in four days by applying experience from earlier video-related projects. Rather than conducting extensive market research first, he distributed early access to friends, requested feedback, and used the response to guide further development.[11]

By August 2026, Chen was publicly describing an AI-assisted workflow involving Intercom, GitHub, and Cursor. In that setup, customer bug reports and feature requests could trigger the Cursor bot to investigate code, begin implementation, and produce pull requests.[5]

The evidence establishes his use of Cursor for this workflow. It does not establish that he uses every other AI coding assistant available on the market.

Business Model

Testimonial initially offered lifetime access during its Product Hunt launch. Chen discontinued that model at the beginning of 2021 because ongoing video hosting and streaming costs made unlimited lifetime access difficult to sustain. He instead prioritized recurring subscriptions.[7]

His later growth strategy included public product updates, search-engine optimization, affiliate referrals, onboarding emails, product tours, and opportunities for free users to upgrade after experiencing the product's value.[2]

Chen published Testimonial revenue milestones during 2021, including an early recurring-revenue report and a later annualized milestone. Those historical founder-reported figures are recorded separately rather than presented as current revenue.[3][2]

PDF.ai followed a different starting point: Chen acquired an existing, pre-revenue project rather than building it from scratch. He subsequently published a revenue update for November 2023, reporting that the product had crossed a monthly revenue threshold. The corresponding record represents that disclosed threshold, not an independently audited exact total.[4][12]

Chen also reported accepting backing from Earnest Capital, later known as Calm Fund, in May 2021. Consequently, descriptions of his entire business history as exclusively self-funded would be inaccurate.[2]

Timeline

  • Began learning web development, including React, after working in infrastructure software.[11]
  • Started actively building and shipping independent software projects.[3]
  • Launched Testimonial on Product Hunt as his fifth bootstrapped project.[7]
  • Ended Testimonial's lifetime-deal model and concentrated on subscriptions.[2]
  • Left his Cisco job to pursue the business full-time.[2]
  • Reported Testimonial's early subscription growth and accepted Calm Fund backing.[3][2]
  • Reached a founder-reported annualized revenue milestone for Testimonial.[2]
  • PDF.ai launched under its new brand following Chen's acquisition of the underlying project.[4][8]
  • Reported a monthly revenue milestone for PDF.ai.[12]
  • Described connecting customer support and development workflows to Cursor through an AI assistant.[5]

Lessons

Reuse existing work to accelerate validation. Chen's early Testimonial launch benefited from code and experience accumulated through previous products. The important principle was to get a usable core workflow in front of potential customers rather than perfecting a large feature set before launch.[11][2]

Match pricing to operating costs. Testimonial's move away from lifetime deals illustrates the need to account for recurring infrastructure costs, especially when a service stores and streams user-generated video.[7]

Distribution remains a separate skill. Chen has credited public building, SEO, and affiliates as important acquisition channels. More recently, he warned that easier AI-assisted coding can encourage founders to keep adding features while neglecting marketing.[2][13]

Use AI automation to connect customer problems to development. His Cursor workflow links customer-support reports to technical investigation and potential code changes, providing a concrete example of AI coding assistance within an operating SaaS business.[5]

The key is to start doing it, learn by doing.

For the AI coding tool explicitly associated with Chen's documented development workflow, see Cursor in the AI IDE List directory. His use case illustrates how a coding assistant can participate in support-driven software maintenance rather than only generating code from standalone prompts.[5]
