Ivan Kutskir Overview
Ivan Kutskir, also known as Ivan Kuckir, is a programmer based in Prague who studied computer science at Charles University.[1][2] He created Photopea and later expanded into vector graphics and music software.[3]
His development model is largely solo: he says he usually works alone, while acknowledging that other programmers contributed components such as PeaDrive and some filters.[3] In his 2017 account of Photopea's development, he wrote:[2]
My name is Ivan Kutskir and I am the only developer of Photopea.
What Ivan Kutskir Built
Photopea is a browser-based image editor with PSD opening and saving, layers, masks, smart objects, and support for numerous graphics formats.[4] Its first public version was a PSD viewer, released in 2013 after development began in 2012.[5]

Vectorpea is a separate browser-based vector graphics editor supporting AI, PDF, and SVG files.[6] It became publicly available in October 2023.[7]

Jampea is an online MIDI music editor.[8] Kutskir describes it as a digital audio workstation intended to make starting music creation simpler.[3]

How Ivan Kutskir Builds
Kutskir described Photopea's implementation as JavaScript with GLSL for GPU computations.[9] The downloaded application performs its core editing work on the user's device; optional accounts and PeaDrive storage use server-side PHP components.[9] This architecture separates local editing from optional online services.[9]
His public repositories also serve a practical support function: Photopea and Vectorpea use GitHub for bug reports, feature requests, and discussion, while their complete applications are not open source.[10][6] Separately, he has released reusable libraries under the MIT license.[2] Jampea is listed as proprietary software by AlternativeTo.[11]
In his Reddit AMA, Kutskir said he was starting to use AI models and considered them helpful for developers, but that answer did not identify a specific coding assistant.[3] Consequently, this profile does not attribute a named AI coding tool to him.
Business Model
In his May 2025 interview, Kutskir attributed 90% of revenue to advertising and the remainder to Premium accounts and licensing contracts.[9] He later clarified that Premium access is purchased for a fixed period through manual payments rather than automatic recurring billing.[3]
The monthly revenue record below represents approximate advertising revenue he reported in September 2021, rather than a complete revenue breakdown.[5] The annual record covers 2024 revenue disclosed on May 9, 2025; its asOf value records that disclosure date.[9] Both figures are founder-reported historical disclosures, not payment-verified results or current revenue estimates.[5][9]
Timeline
- Began developing a browser-based PSD viewer.[5]
- Released Photopea's first public version.[5]
- Started monetizing Photopea through advertising and offered Premium accounts.[9]
- Made Vectorpea publicly available.[7]
- Discussed Photopea's architecture, business model, and previous year's revenue in an interview.[9]
Lessons
His marketing experience also offers a useful qualification: many promotional posts were removed, while unsolicited reviews and videos helped bring attention to Photopea.[5] That account supports treating community participation and independently earned coverage as different growth mechanisms.[5]
